Steve Slimm – a Life Coach with a Difference
From his mid-teens Steve has always been involved in one way or another with other peoples’ progress through life and specific aspects that are implicated. He was raised from the age of three in a somewhat narrowly interpretative family situation in a minor Christian religious organisation. Within this arena from the age of sixteen he held various positions of responsibility that brought him into direct relationship with the ongoing outworking of others’ personal progress, as well as misgivings, anxieties and problems. This spiritual ‘shepherding’ as it was called, later, on leaving the confines of the church, became the springboard for a radical shift into his current approach to life coaching. And yet, having seen clearly the distinction between assisting others in facilitating change, and his outmoded mode of shepherding the flock, there remains still something innocently nurturing about his style of life coaching. Added to this the dynamic nature of his unequivocal belief in the potential of all human beings to effect change in themselves, his success with individuals has been astounding. Unlike many practitioners whose custom is to look for ways in which to retain their clients, Steve never expects to keep a client for long, sees and truly believes in their full capacity for renewal, and coaches them accordingly. As he humorously points out, he would rather not waste his and his clients’ time on unnecessarily dragging out the process, when there is plenty more music to make!
Thus Steve has been able to work effectively with deeper issues involving relationship, abandonment, confidence and assertiveness etc. in such a dynamic yet dignified way that facilitates his clients to move smoothly toward their desired state of being, i.e. to be happy with themselves and the world around them. It is more than likely his capacity for self-examination and self-awareness that makes it relatively easy for his clients to be likewise.
Clients often work with Steve from other locations over the phone, and from his point of view there are advantages to this, as well as advantages of working face to face; so all things considered, both can be equally effective.
Steve began life coaching as an integral aspect of his work in 2004, but it has taken him until recently to be really comfortable with his own feelings about what others would think of his seeming incongruous roles of artistic creativity and life coaching service. As he says rather ingenuously: “What the f**k, I am who I am – I do what I do. Anyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t have to have it!” It is probably this kind of somewhat self-effacing comment that ultimately draws others toward him and wins over their own misgivings about themselves.
Since enthusiastically taking up life coaching Steve has also written much of a self-motivational nature (or self-realisation as he likes to call it). Like most work in the genre, much of this has been to do with his personal issues. His desire to share this work with others has remained a prime motivation toward presenting the issues in a format that is both accessible and easy to understand and apply. This material is available in various forms through his websites, some of which is free and some requiring a small payment.
Art Coaching
Recently Steve has also added 'Art Coach' to his coaching portfolio. Over the years he has often been asked regarding painting tuition, but has always shied away. However, since coming to Life Coaching generally, he is now interested in helping any artist who wants to be coached. Art coaching is not tuition as such, but rather facilitating the artist's own personal empowerment, including the subjects, techniques, materials etc they are exploring in their work. This type of coaching, although more efficiently done face to face, can also be effective at a distance, through a combination of the internet and telephone.
